Hand-painted watercolour botanical illustration of Kawakawa, a native New Zealand medicinal plant with heart-shaped leaves.

This hand-painted botanical illustration explores Kawakawa, a native New Zealand plant recognised for its distinctive heart-shaped leaves and naturally occurring markings formed by native looper caterpillars.

Created in watercolour following close observational study, the artwork was inspired by time spent immersed within New Zealand’s natural landscape and the plant’s deep connection to Māori healing traditions. Kawakawa is often associated with presence, courage, emotional balance, and restoration – qualities that subtly informed the direction and feeling of the piece.

Designed with beverage packaging and wellness-focused branding in mind, the illustration translates organically across tonic water, botanical drinks, health products, and nature-led packaging applications. The layered botanical detailing and calming palette bring a sense of authenticity, softness, and connection to the natural world.
